Berthoud CARES was established in January 2007 in response to a great need for coordination, communication, and facilitation of fundraising efforts for those in need in our community. Following a tragic accident involving several local young people, the community of Berthoud along with other groups and individuals from around the State of Colorado and nationwide, responded with care, concern, and amazing energy and dedication to provide whatever support and fundraising they could. Hundreds of people responded with offers to help, dozens of fundraising efforts were organized, and hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised in an unbelievably short amount of time. The founding members of Berthoud CARES saw a need to help facilitate those efforts and provide guidance, a web site, a hotline, and other resources to help the fundraising efforts be as effective and efficient as possible. Berthoud CARES!Berthoud CARES truly does care about everyone in our community! Berthoud CARES Receives Duo Grantsto Support Continuation of Organization’s Programs and Website Berthoud CARES, the local community organization that was established in January 2007 in response to a great need for coordination, communication, and facilitation for those in need in our community, has been awarded two financial grants by local and national organizations with the goal of continuing benefit to the Berthoud Community.
The first grant was given to Berthoud CARES by the Allstate Foundation via their Hands in the Community Grant Program. Robert Towles, a Northern Colorado Allstate Agent and Berthoud CARES Board member, made application to Allstate on behalf of Berthoud CARES. Towles was seeking funding for the Kids Helping Kids community grant program which is part of Berthoud CARES.
“The Kids Helping Kids Fund was developed by Berthoud CARES with the belief that even small amounts of money, carefully used, can have an important effect on someone's life,” explained Towles when making the grant presentation to Berthoud CARES President Mark Chaffee and Secretary Jim Birdsall. “This community program provides assistance for children and/or families within the Berthoud community, who need to get through short-term crisis situations and who have needs that are not met by other public or private programs,” explained Towles.
Information on the Kids Helping Kids Grant Application may be obtained via the organization’s website (www.berthoudcares.com).
Individuals may not directly apply to Berthoud CARES and the Kids Helping Kids Grant Program. Applications must be submitted by Berthoud School administrators on behalf of those children and/or families who are in need. Grants are small and one time allocations paid directly to vendors; but are intended to help with such dilemmas as:
- Medical Needs: Medically related travel, dental procedures, medications not covered by insurance or Medicare/Medicaid, medical equipment, laboratory testing, etc.
- Therapeutic Equipment and Activities: Items recommended by therapists and psychiatrists, such as: bicycles for children in need of exercise, water therapy classes, some “sports” equipment, classes in martial arts, etc.
- Health & Safety Needs: food (if other organizations have already been utilized), disability access or furniture, car repairs, etc. - for medical needs.
- Emergency Services: Emergency housing, emergency transportation, immediate and short-term counseling on an emergency basis, housing relocation help for victims of domestic violence, etc.
- School/Educational Needs: Uniforms & clothing for school, books, etc.
Funding for the Kids Helping Kids Grant Program comes from an annual campaign in February that is run by the students of Berthoud, at each of the area’s schools. Other donations are always welcomed from community members, businesses and organizations.
“Due to the present economic climate, many children and families are in need in our community,” explained Chaffee. “If we could ask ever resident in Berthoud to make an annual donation of $10 per year, we could assist over 150 cases annually!”
To make a tax-deductible donation to Berthoud CARES and the Kids Helping Kids Grant Program, you can send your donation to Berthoud CARES, P. O. Box 869, Berthoud, CO 80513 or drop by a deposit to Home State Bank C/O the Berthoud CARES account.

The second grant awarded to Berthoud CARES came Monday night (November 16) from the Berthoud Community Foundation. This local community grant will assist Berthoud CARES in funding for the continuation of the organization’s website (www.berthoudcares.com).
“The Berthoud CARES website has been instrumental, from the outset of the organization through today. It is a vital community tool that assists individuals and organization in our community by bringing to light those campaigns and issues that are facing our community at large,” explained Chaffee in his acceptance of funding on Monday night. “From the very first campaign in 2007 through the present, the Berthoud CARES website continues to offer valuable resources, community information and individual needs.”
“Berthoud CARES is most appreciative of the support that is continually granted to our organization by local and national donors,” explained Birdsall. “We hope to continue in our efforts of providing the necessary resources and information that will enhance an overall awareness to benefit individuals and/or organizations within our community.”
